This was the deadliest year for journalists since CPJ began collecting data. The majority of these deaths were linked to the Israel-Gaza conflict, with 85 journalists killed by Israeli forces.

In 2023, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) documented the deaths of 129 journalists and media workers. This included 14 women. The IFJ considers 2023 one of the deadliest years since they began tracking journalist deaths in 1990. The majority of these deaths, including 70% of all deaths in 2023, occurred in the Gaza war.
