A mosquito’s “trunk”—more accurately called a proboscis—is generally about one-third to one-half the length of its entire body. While a typical mosquito body measures between 3 mm and 10 mm in length, its elongated proboscis can reach up to 2 mm to 5 mm long.

Protrusion: The proboscis protrudes far past the mosquito’s head, appearing several times longer than the head itself. Hidden Complexity: Though it looks like a single needle to the naked eye, it is actually an intricate bundle of six individual, hair-thin stylets used to pierce skin, inject saliva, and siphon blood. Gender Difference: Only females possess the needle-like proboscis required to pierce skin for a blood meal. Males have wider, non-piercing mouthparts.
