Edward Bernays’ 1928 seminal book Propaganda is a foundational text of modern public relations that explains how governments and corporations can strategically manipulate the attitudes and behaviors of the masses.
The book explores several core themes regarding mass communication in a democratic society:
The Invisible Government: Bernays argued that the conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is a necessary element in a democratic society. He claimed that those who manipulate this unseen mechanism constitute an “invisible government” that holds the true ruling power.
Engineering Consent: Rather than viewing propaganda as a negative or deceptive tool, Bernays framed it as a scientific necessity. He believed that in a complex society, public opinion cannot be left to chance; it must be systematically shaped and directed by experts.
The Power of Psychology: Incorporating early insights from sociology and the psychology of the unconscious, Bernays illustrated how symbols, slogans, and psychological triggers could be used to bypass rational thought and drive public consensus.
Creating Demand: Bernays demonstrated how propaganda is used by businesses to condition mass psychology. By linking products to underlying psychological desires (such as status, identity, or freedom), corporations can manufacture a constant demand for their goods.
